Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between an ultrasound and an X-ray?
X-rays show the shape and size of organs and bones, while ultrasound uses sound waves to show the inside of soft-tissue organs in real time. Ultrasound helps evaluate the liver, kidneys, bladder, intestines and other abdominal organs, and an echocardiogram looks at the heart's structure and function.
Why would my pet need an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a heart ultrasound. It's often recommended when a heart murmur, irregular rhythm, cough, exercise intolerance or enlarged heart on X-rays is found. It shows how the heart chambers and valves are working, which helps guide treatment decisions and monitoring.
Does my pet need to be shaved or sedated for an ultrasound?
A small patch of fur is usually clipped so the probe can make good contact with the skin. Many pets lie still with gentle handling, while anxious pets may need light sedation.
